Yep, this is a well executed model with only a wonky impulse engine to complain about. The signature Klingon green hull has a worn, mottled finish and unlike some models is applied everywhere. It makes quite an aggressive looking vessel. Underneath there is a myriad of weapons – two under the bridge, a huge pair of disrupters under the main hull and even larger cannons on the ends of each wing. There is more good use of transparent red plastic, at the back for the warp engine and at the front with a green grill painted on. One is a bit wonky unfortunately having not been glued into the right place. On top are two impulse engines with yellow plastic used for the rear vents. It’s quite impressive really as the pieces are so fragile and must be fiddly to assemble. Yet another small piece wraps around the front of the bridge. Along the neck are two thin conduits, barely a couple of millimetres thick and to either side thicker pipes snake along the neck and around the bridge. I’ve not seen a model in the collection yet that uses such small components. Klingon Bird-of-Prey Star Trek Klingon Bird-of-Prey The ubiquitous spread-wing craft capable of atmospheric, planetary or warp operations is utilized in two classes: the smaller Brel and the larger KVort. There is so much to like about this little model. This is also one of the smallest models so far and surprisingly one of the most intricate. The 22nd Century Bird of Prey from ST:Enterprise is the fourth Klingon ship in the collection and I expect at least two more to appear in future issues plus a special at some point. STAR TREK STARSHIPS FIGURINE COLLECTION MAGAZINE 27 ROMULAN BIRD OF PREY EAGLEMOSS PUBLICATIONS LTD This incredible collection. ( ST reference: Starship Spotter TNG movie: Generations TNG video game: Armada II, et al.Federation aside the Klingons are the best represented race in this collection. Starfleet becomes aware of the existence of the Romulan Star Empire. Though the K'vort, and later Chuq'Beh-class were notably larger than the original B'rel design. It also spawned several other Bird-of-Prey classes of near identical design, including the D12-class and K'vort-class. The B'rel-class was a highly successful design and served long into the 24th century. ( TOS comic: " Trekkers" ST reference: Starship Spotter) The B'rel-class was designed from Romulan concepts obtained in the Klingon-Romulan Alliance, the most notable technology integrated into the vessel from that alliance being a cloaking device. ( ENT episode: " The Expanse")īy 2270 the Empire had introduced one of the most successful and long serving class of Bird-of-Prey, the B'rel-class. The earliest known classes of Bird-of-Prey were in operation in the mid- 22nd century. In analyzing the word D'Gavama, the reader may also wish to consider these other ship names from the Klingon Ship Recognition Manual: d'ama ("predator"), z'gavva ("stronger bird") and z'gavasta ("great bird"). ( FASA RPG module: Klingon Ship Recognition Manual) The D'Gavama-class gets its name from a klingonaase word meaning "bird-of-prey". ( tlhIngan Hol reference: The Klingon Dictionary) The word can be broken down into toQ, "bird-of-prey", and Duj, "ship". In tlhIngan Hol, a Bird-of-Prey type ship is called a toQDuj. Note that variants of the design which are significantly larger or smaller have their own entires under B'rel, K'pak and D'tai. ( TOS movie: The Search for Spock TNG episode: " Yesterday's Enterprise" ENT episode: " The Expanse", et al.) Although sources are inconsistent, most calculations of the length of a Bird of Prey class ship yield a length of approximately 109 metres. Certain classes featured additional armaments such as rear firing torpedoes and additional disruptors. To either side of the main hull are wings with disruptor cannons mounted at the end. Usually a photon torpedo tube was located on the lower side of the command bulb. The typical Bird-of-Prey design featured a primary hull with a long protruding neck at the front with a command bulb at the end, a variation on what is known as the Drell design. ( TOS movie: The Search for Spock TNG episode: " Yesterday's Enterprise") Over time the designation was expanded to be used on larger classes with a similar design to traditional birds-of-prey. The Klingons produced numerous classes of starships designated Bird-of-Prey, traditionally these were smaller classes used as scouts.
